    Constraints From Gauge Coupling Unification On The Scale Of Supersymmetry Breaking

    We reanalyze precision LEP data and coupling constant unification in the minimal supersymmetric SU(5)SU(5) model including the evolution of the gaugino masses. We derive general bounds on the primordial gaugino supersymmetry-breaking mass-scale m1/2m_{1/2} in terms of the various input parameters. The model cannot accommodate m_{1/2}<1\TeV for values of \as < 0.115, even for extreme 1σ1-\sigma values of the other inputs.     Large Transverse Momentum Jet Production and DIS Distributions of the Proton

    We have calculated the single jet inclusive cross section as measured at Fermilab in next-to-leading order QCD using recent parton distributions of the CTEQ collaboration. We studied the scheme dependence of the jet cross section by employing the \overline{\mbox{MS}} and DIS factorization schemes consistently. For ET>200E_T > 200 GeV, we find that the cross section in the DIS scheme is larger than in the \overline{\mbox{MS}} scheme yielding a satisfactory description of the CDF data over the whole ETE_T range in the DIS scheme.Comment: 7 pages, latex, 2 figures include

    BFKL predictions at small x from k_T and collinear factorization viewpoints

    Hard scattering processes involving hadrons at small xx are described by a kTk_T-factorization formula driven by a BFKL gluon. We explore the equivalence of this description to a collinear-factorization approach in which the anomalous dimensions γgg\gamma_{gg} and γqg/αS\gamma_{qg}/\alpha_S are expressed as power series in αSlog(1/x)\alpha_S \log (1/x), or to be precise αS/ω\alpha_S/\omega where ω\omega is the moment index.     A two-level Markov model for packet loss in UDP/IP-based real-time video applications targeting residential users

    The packet loss characteristics of Internet paths that include residential broadband links are not well understood, and there are no good models for their behaviour. This compli- cates the design of real-time video applications targeting home users, since it is difficult to choose appropriate error correction and concealment algorithms without a good model for the types of loss observed. Using measurements of residential broadband networks in the UK and Finland, we show that existing models for packet loss, such as the Gilbert model and simple hidden Markov models, do not effectively model the loss patterns seen in this environment. We present a new two-level Markov model for packet loss that can more accurately describe the characteristics of these links, and quantify the effectiveness of this model. We demonstrate that our new packet loss model allows for improved application design, by using it to model the performance of forward error correction on such links

    Trends and inequalities in laryngeal cancer survival in men and women: England and Wales 1991-2006.

    Laryngeal cancer in men is a relatively common malignancy, with a marked socioeconomic gradient in survival between affluent and deprived patients. Cancer of the larynx in women is rare. Survival tends to lower than for men, and little is known about the association between deprivation and survival in women with laryngeal cancer. This paper explores the trends and socio-economic inequalities in laryngeal cancer survival in women, with comparison to men. We examined relative survival among men and women diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in England and Wales during 1991-2006, followed up to 31 December 2007. We estimated the difference in survival between the most deprived and most affluent groups (the 'deprivation gap') at one and five years after diagnosis, for each sex, anatomical subsite and calendar period. Five year survival for all laryngeal cancers combined was up to 8% lower in women than in men. This difference is only partially explained by the differential distribution of anatomical subsites in men and women. Disparities in survival between men and women were also present within specific subsites. In contrast to men, there was little evidence of a consistent deprivation gap in survival for women at any of the anatomical subsites. The stark socioeconomic inequalities in laryngeal cancer survival in men do not appear to be replicated in women. The origins of the socio-economic inequalities in survival among men, and the disparities in survival between men and women at specific tumour subsites remains unclear

    Generalizing Minimal Supergravity

    In Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), the Standard Model (SM) gauge couplings need not be unified at the GUT scale due to the high-dimensional operators. Considering gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking, we study for the first time the generic gauge coupling relations at the GUT scale, and the general gaugino mass relations which are valid from the GUT scale to the electroweak scale at one loop. We define the index k for these relations, which can be calculated in GUTs and can be determined at the Large Hadron Collider and the future International Linear Collider. Thus, we give a concrete definition of the GUT scale in these theories, and suggest a new way to test general GUTs at future experiments. We also discuss five special scenarios with interesting possibilities. With our generic formulae, we present all the GUT-scale gauge coupling relations and all the gaugino mass relations in the SU(5) and SO(10) models, and calculate the corresponding indices k. Especially, the index k is 5/3 in the traditional SU(5) and SO(10) models that have been studied extensively so far. Furthermore, we discuss the field theory realization of the U(1) flux effects on the SM gauge kinetic functions in F-theory GUTs, and calculate their indices k as well.Comment: RevTex4, 14 pages, 4 tables, references added, version in PL

    Pinning down the Glue in the Proton

    The latest measurements of F2F_2 at HERA allow for a {\it combination} of gluon and sea quark distributions at small xx that is significantly different from those of existing parton sets. We perform a new global fit to deep-inelastic and related data. We find a gluon distribution which is larger for x \lapproxeq 0.01, and smaller for x0.1x \sim 0.1, and a flatter input sea quark distribution than those obtained in our most recent global analysis. The new fit also gives αs(MZ2)=0.114\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.114. We study other experimental information available for the gluon including, in particular, the constraints coming from fixed-target and collider prompt γ\gamma production data.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, 6 figs available as .uu fil

    PhD ThesisComputer architectures can use custom logic in addition to general pur- pose processors to improve performance for a variety of applications. The use of custom logic allows greater parallelism for some algorithms. While conventional CPUs typically operate on words, ne-grained custom logic can improve e ciency for many bit level operations. The commodi ca- tion of eld programmable devices, particularly FPGAs, has improved the viability of using custom logic in an architecture. This thesis introduces an approach to reasoning about the correctness of compilers that generate custom logic that can be synthesized to provide hardware acceleration for a given application. Compiler intermediate representations (IRs) and transformations that are relevant to genera- tion of custom logic are presented. Architectures may vary in the way that custom logic is incorporated, and suitable abstractions are used in order that the results apply to compilation for a variety of the design parameters that are introduced by the use of custom logic

    Constraints from Accelerator Experiments on the Elastic Scattering of CMSSM Dark Matter

    We explore the allowed ranges of cross sections for the elastic scattering of neutralinos \chi on nucleons in the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (CMSSM), in which scalar and gaugino masses are each assumed to be universal at some input grand unification scale. We extend previous calculations to larger \tan \beta and investigate the limits imposed by the recent LEP lower limit on the mass of the Higgs boson and by b \to s \gamma, and those suggested by g_\mu - 2. The Higgs limit and b \to s \gamma provide upper limits on the cross section, particularly at small and large \tan \beta, respectively, and the value of g_\mu - 2 suggests a lower limit on the cross section for \mu > 0. The spin-independent nucleon cross section is restricted to the range 6 \times 10^{-8} pb > \sigma_{SI} > 2 \times 10^{-10} pb for \mu > 0, and the spin-dependent nucleon cross section to the range 10^{-5} pb > \sigma_{SD} > 2 \times 10^{-7} pb.
